Social media has become a major part of high school life, influencing how students communicate and express themselves. While it offers connection and entertainment, it can also have a serious impact on students’ moods and performance in school.

School counselor Mrs.Jennifer Kulas hears many students coming to the counselors feeling upset or distressed because of negative comments made on social media.

“Social media can have an even stronger effect on students who are already struggling with anxiety or depression. Constant exposure to others' posts can also lead to comparison and lower self-esteem, making it hard for students to stay confident and focused,” Kulas said.

Negative posts, rumors, and online drama are among the most common issues students face. Hurtful comments, whether seen directly or reported by friends, can spread quickly , leading to embarrassment, conflict, or isolation. These situations often carry over into the school environment, affecting students' ability to concentrate and engage in class.

To address the challenge, the school has taken steps to promote healthier online habits. Counselors, teachers and administrators talk with students about how to respond or not respond to online negativity. Digital citizenship lessons have been added to classrooms and administrators intervene when online behavior becomes bullying or harassment. By raising awareness and encouraging respectful online behavior, the school hopes to create a safer, more supportive environment for all students.
